Shannyn is a former English teacher, who now works as a part-time editor while raising her three kids.

Even though she wrote from high school through college (mostly poetry), she’d never considered a career as an author. Writing fell by the wayside as she focused her energy on creating lesson plans and new and fabulous ways to torment her teen students. One group in particular dubbed her “The Torture Master,” a title she carried into motherhood.

After the birth of baby number two, Shannyn resigned from teaching and fell in love with reading romance novels. She read so many books so quickly that her husband teased, “If you’re going to read so many damn books, why don’t you just write one?”

So she did.

That first book is safely buried on her hard drive, but the process set Shannyn on the path to where she is today—agented with a debut ebook coming out with Kensington in late 2012.

She is recovering from her Diet Coke addiction, fears putting her foot in her mouth on social media, and has a renewed appreciation for the bad girls of the world.

Guest blog from Sarah Smith Ducksworth, author of No Crystal Stair

Title: No Crystal Stair

Author: Sarah Smith Ducksworth

Publisher: Trafford

Genre: Poetry

Format: Kindle

Each poem in this collection is a reflection upon the author’s personal life or is a response to her vicarious interactions in the lives of characters she has met in real life or in books. Through the critical lens of poetry, she has looked for deeper meanings inside those experiences. Though the writer ends with an understanding that her life has not been a “crystal stair,” alluding to the hardships the titular character in Langston Hughes’ Poem–“The Negro Mother”– faced, the writer feels that these poems, all together, reflect her world view and personal Truth.

To Purchase No Crystal Stair

Guest Post

When I was in elementary school, my mother, who observed me constantly scribbling on paper, told me I should never write anything down that I would be embarrassed to have the world read. She gave me this warning back in the day when both manual and electric typewriters were primarily considered office equipment and there were no digital devices available for composing and sending messages through space. Moreover, the technology did not exist for desktop and portable computers which could store countless volumes of random thoughts. Back in those olden days, I was what you might call a stream of conscious writer, putting my ideas and fancies into notebooks. And, my mother perceived a danger in this.
As a child I did not realize that such eclectic and responsive writing could be classified as therapy.  All I knew was that writing was for me a necessary extension of myself. I wrote about things I thought about—things that hurt my feelings, desires for revenge, wishes, and whatever else that made me tick. The same is true today. I write about things that trouble me, about fantasies that intrigue me, etc.; and, in the process, I exorcise demons and find ways to improve good and bad situations.
Of course, over the years, there have been times when the wrong people have gotten hold of some rant I’ve written and used it against me. The trouble my mother perceived so long ago has been proven time and time again as prophetic. And so, over time, I have become more careful in protecting my private thoughts. Still, the digital world has caused me a huge setback. The world-wide web, rife with hackers, has become my biggest challenge. Based on recent experience, I know first-hand that the internet is no place to vent.
Back in 2010, I went online and filled out a form posted by a self-proclaimed “ethics investigator.” I asked this expert about the ethics of a local prosecutor who would not assist me in finding out who was hacking my cell phone. I also invited comments from visitors to this “legal” website. In my post, I explained that there was a person who was remotely using up data on my phone and that this person had caused my cell phone, while it was lying dormant inside my pocketbook, to dial my landline phone.
Since that ethics question was posted in 2010, it has stayed prominently associated online with my name. Someone must be very interested in this post; yet, there has never been a response to my query, either from the ethics investigator or from one of his visitors. I felt hopeful when I first posted the question, but its staying power as an online item both puzzles and bothers me today.
Do I regret putting a sensitive question into the public sphere, which has the life span of dirt? The answer is yes. But, on the other hand, my life has been greatly enriched by the caveat my action provided. As result of my experience, I will consider the thin line between public and private communications when it comes to social media in the future.
Now, I face another consideration: Do I have to slash and burn my electronic diaries? After being hacked, I believe I should. Unfortunately, the loss of this private writing could translate into a loss of wisdom and hamper my growth as a writer. The only solution may be returning to pen and pad. But, even that may not work if someone really wants to get me and invades my home. Farfetched, you say?
When confronted with the choice of writing freely for emotional release or not writing things I don’t want to share, I have to choose writing anyway and taking the precaution to keep those ideas off the web.
Writers from the past and present support me in extolling the therapeutic value of writing to explore one’s own world view. Graham Greene conveyed the benefits of diary writing when he mused: “I wonder how all those who do not compose or paint can manage to escape the madness, melancholia, the panic and fear which is inherent in a human situation.”

About the Author

For most of her life, Sarah Smith Ducksworth has seen herself as a teacher who writes. She has had a teaching career spanning nearly forty years and has taught language arts in New York and in New Jersey middle schools, high schools and universities. This current book of creative writings represents a reversal in the way she has begun to identify herself and launches her intent to spend the rest of her life pursuing her love of writing.

What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in
your life?
My last book Chronicles: The Library of Illumination was
named to Kirkus Reviews” Best Book of
2014 and I cried when I was notified about that. Knowing someone other than my
family and friends appreciated my efforts meant a lot to me.
How has your upbringing influenced your writing?
My father
encouraged reading and had me signed up for book clubs before I could read.
Those books were for children, but up in our attic were piles of my father’s
books. I remember trying to read the Iliad and the Odyssey when I was still
young, but I wasn’t able to appreciate them. From the third grade on, my father
drove me to the library every other week, so I could return the books I had and
sign out new ones. I’ve always been a voracious reader and I have him to thank
for it.
When and why did you begin writing?
I began writing
my first story when I was seven for no reason other than I wanted to spin a
tale. I’ve always had a vivid imagination and I’ve always been a dreamer, so
it’s easy for me to come up with stories and turn my thoughts into words. I
didn’t choose to be a writer; it happened because I love books, I love to read,
and I love imaginative stories.
What inspires you to write and why?
I’m inspired
by almost everything. I’ll hear a snippet of conversation or see something a
little out of the ordinary happen, and I’ll weave it into whatever I’m writing.
I once watched as a friend on mine stalked a fly with two paper plates. He
wanted to kill the fly, but didn’t want to get his hands dirty. It was very
funny to watch and I eventually wrote it into a play I was working on called Women with Large Satchels. Inspiration
is all around us.
What genre are you most comfortable writing?
I started out
writing historical thrillers, then historical fantasy, and now young adult
fantasy. YA fantasy is the most fun. I get my characters to say and do things
that more experienced (uptight) people would never attempt, and being able to
do that allows me to fully exercise my imagination.
What inspired you to write your first book?
My first
novel-length book stated as a joke. A friend and I would each write a couple of
lines and email it back and forth. He quit by page five, but I enjoyed it so
much I continued doing it by myself. I did it until I had a full-length novel.
It was awful. I know, because one of my friends said, “I give you credit just
for finishing the book. If you have
nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all.
I rewrote that book a dozen
times, and while it improved each time, I was unable to get an agent to
represent me. So I self-published it on Kindle. That was in 2009 and I haven’t
stopped publishing my work since.
Who or what influenced your writing once you
began?
I love writers’
conferences and writers groups for getting feedback from other writers and
publishing professionals. There’s a conference held in New York City every
summer call Thrillerfest and this summer I’ll be attending my ninth conference
with them. It starts out with something called Craftfest, which is a series of
seminars and workshops that teach the art of writing. It’s geared toward
thrillers, but the techniques work for every type of writer, and I’ve learned a
lot from attending. I also like writers’ groups. Here on Long Island we have
the Long Island Writer’s Guild, and I’ve learned a lot from their critiques of
my work, especially when I was writing the first Library of Illumination books.
What do you consider the most challenging about
writing a novel, or about writing in general?
The most
challenging thing about writing a novel is finding time when you won’t be
interrupted. Nothing is as frustrating as losing your train of thought when
someone disturbs you. I refuse to answer the phone, and I turn down the volume
on my computer so I won’t hear the ping
of new email, but my cell phone will vibrate every time there’s a text, or my
husband will knock on the door with a question, so there’s no such thing as
pure solitude. And that’s what challenges me most as a writer.
Did writing this book teach you anything and what
was it?
Developing Myrddin’s Memoir, which is contained
within Second Chronicles of Illumination required
a lot of research into the legend of Kind Arthur and the origins of Merlin the
Magician. I also did a lot of research into remote British islands looking for
the perfect place to stage it, and learned a lot about the wildlife preserve
and bird sanctuary on Skokholm Island in Wales. Then I created a kind of
diagram with bits of factual information and fictional ideas that I could draw
from while writing. So I can say writing this particular book taught me a lot
about Arthurian legend and Celtic history.
Do you intend to make writing a career?
Writing has
always been my career. My first career was writing news. My current career is
writing fiction. I prefer fiction. It’s way more fun.
What is your
greatest strength as a writer?
My greatest
strength lies in my imagination and the way I can visualize scenes. I actually
see them playing out in my head, like a mini-movie and I react to them, whether
it’s with tears, excitement or anxiety. I live every emotion with my characters,
and try to make their reactions as “real” as possible.
What is your favorite quality about yourself?
My favorite
personal quality is my imagination.
What is your least favorite quality about
yourself?
I hate being
shy—really, really shy. Some people think I’m aloof. I’m not aloof. I’m afraid.
Engage me in a conversation and I’ll be your BFF.
What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why?
“That which
does not kill us, makes us stronger” —Friedrich Nietzsche

Her books range from epic fantasy, full of hot heroes and demons, to humorous urban fantasy, where hockey moms are grim reapers and Greek gods live next door. Though she loves writing romance, Boone prefers stories where she gets to blow something up or kill somebody.

I grew up on the Florida panhandle, swimming with alligators, climbing oak trees and diving for scallops…when I could pull myself away from a book. As a child, I hid my Nancy Drew novels inside the church bulletin and read mysteries during sermons—an irony that is not lost on me when I preach these days.

I’m an Episcopal Priest and student of the worlds’ religions. I believe stories are the best way to explore human truths, and I’m passionate about the deep ties between spirituality and sexuality. Some people think it’s strange for a minister to write romance, but it is perfectly natural to me, because the human desire for love is at the heart of every romance novel and God made people with that desire.

I write paranormal, historical and contemporary romance and live with my husband and two children in San Francisco.

My literary agent is the fabulous Becca Stumpf of the Prospect Agency.

What Inspired Me to Become a Write by Alan A. Winter, author of Island Bluffs

Publisher: KBPublishing

Genre: Thriller/Suspense

Format: Kindle/Paperback

It explores the age-old question: are children accountable for the sins of their parents and grandparents? Carly Mason is a successful New York City forensic dentist. She and her widower husband, Gabe Berk, are trying to start a family. Thinking they had exhausted the options by consulting with all of Manhattan’s fertility experts, Carly and Gabe learn of an eccentric scientist who runs an exclusive clinic. The doctor commits to helping the couple conceive the baby they so desperately want, but only if they agree to what seems like an outrageous stipulation; Carly must carry twins, one biological and one that she is a surrogate for. Once the twins are born Carly has to surrender the non-biological twin to the doctor at birth, no questions asked. Further, should the old doctor die before Carly gives birth, she has to agree to give the baby the name chosen by the doctor. As required for treatment, Carly and Gabe move into a new house, which is within thirty minutes of the clinic. They soon discover that their new home and town, Island Bluffs, are far from ordinary. Carly and Gabe feel eyes spying on them at every turn. Gabe’s father, Yehuda, hears strange noises that only he can hear. Megan, Gabe’s rebellious sixteen-year-old daughter from a previous marriage, is attracted to the son of a Neo-Nazi. The mysteries continue to deepen as a scavenger ship appears on nearby waters searching for sunken treasure along with glimpses of a lone swimmer lumbering through the waves of Barnegat Bay. Island Bluffs is a present-day town bound to the past by horrible secrets and pacts made long ago. Keeping secrets buried as some had hoped was no longer an option for the Berks. Their new and some thought long-forgotten home made that impossible by putting them squarely in the middle of it all. When the truths are revealed, the shocking twists and turns will challenge the very notions of what is right and wrong.

What Inspired Me To Become a Writer?

Bottom line: I am a storyteller, I always have been, but I never had aspirations to become a writer. Then a story began to haunt me. What would I do if someone rang my doorbell and, standing next to a teenage boy, informed my wife and me that we had brought the wrong baby home from the hospital? Where did this notion come from? Because my three sons looked nothing alike and anyone who met them was quick to say so . . .and quick to tell me that a mistake had to be made in the hospital. This was back in the early 1980s, when babies switched at birth had not made newspaper headlines.

The only way I could lose the story was to put pen to paper. When I did, it was not only a catharsis but I became enamored with the writing process. My challenge at that point was purely intellectual: could I make up a story that was believable about babies switched at birth. I made it a point of not telling anyone what I was doing. I didn’t need anyone’s approval or even recognition of what I was doing. I was pleasing myself.

I had the good fortune of getting my manuscript to a well-known literary agent at the William Morris Agency. She called to tell me to say she was rejecting me but wanted to meet me . . . something she had never done. When we met, she said, “While I am rejecting you, you are a writer and want you to promise me that you will never give up.” And I haven’t.

At first blush, Alan is quick to say that he never intended to be a writer. But when he thinks about it, he’s been writing in one form or another, for his entire adult life. In college, he wrote paper after paper for his history and literature courses. Professionally, he edited a dental journal and wrote more than twenty
scientific papers. That still doesn’t explain how a dentist came to write fiction!

It started in 1982 when Alan made small talk with a patient about a sci-fi idea he had. She thought the idea was so terrific, she urged him to write a movie treatment about it. Alan dismissed her offhand. What did he know about writing movies?

The patient persisted. Each time she would visit his office, she would demand to see the finished movie treatment. Seeing she was serious and relentless, Alan agreed to hand her a treatment. But how? He had no clue where to start. Asking other patients for guidance, Alan was introduced to a young screenwriter who agreed – for a fee – to write the treatment. They worked together, produced a treatment, and shopped it around to a number of studios. One studio took the idea (without permission or payment) and turned Alan’s treatment into a movie.

Alan experienced two revelations at the time:

1. Rather than waste energy being litigious, be flattered that a studio felt Alan’s idea was worthy of turning it into a movie. Knowing a stranger valued his creativity supported all of his future projects.
2. Collaborating with the screenwriter gave Alan the validation he needed that if and when he chose to write a book, it wouldn’t be foolhardy…not that it really mattered what others thought!

Still, Alan had no desire to write fiction. That changed in 1985. That was the year that Alan began writing his first novel, “Someone Else’s Son,” which was eventually published by MasterMedia, Ltd.

What prompted Alan to write “Someone Else’s Son” is a story in itself. When Alan completed his periodontal training at Columbia, he joined a prestigious Fifth Avenue periodontal practice. Day after day, the well-to-do, prominent patients asked Alan if he was old enough to be a dentist. (He looked that much younger than the two senior partners). Trying to convince the patients that he was old enough to be a dentist and, therefore, experienced enough to treat them, Alan put his two sons’ pictures on the treatment room wall. When his third son was born, he added that one, too. Every few months, he updated the photos.

But a curious thing happened on a daily basis. The patients kept asking why Alan had pictures of children on the wall. When he replied, “They’re not just any children; those are my sons,” no one believed him. They claimed the boys looked too dissimilar to be brothers. They joked that he must have taken the wrong one home from the hospital. Though this was not the case (at least he didn’t think so), Alan wondered what he would’ve done had he discovered, years later, that he and his wife had brought the wrong child home from the hospital. The result was “Someone Else’s Son.”

While maintaining his periodontal practice, Alan has continued to write since he first took up pen to paper, although now he is very appreciative that his mother forced him to take typing in summer school after his sophomore year of high school. Boys just didn’t do that back in the ’60s, but it has been an invaluable skill over the years.

In 1999, “Snowflakes in the Sahara” was published by iUniverse. “Savior’s Day,” also published by iUniverse, was published in 2013 to critical acclaim. It was selected by Kirkus Reviews as a Best Book of 2013.

“Island Bluffs,” Alan’s newest novel, is published by KB Publishing to excellent reviews. He is at work on his next novel, “The Legacy of Izaak Wolf,” about an adolescent with Asperger’s Syndrome achieves the near impossible to save his family from a surefire calamity.

Alan and Lori live in his native New Jersey. They have five children and five grandchildren.
