It looks like someone left the door to the nether region open again, and reporter Molly Martindale has got another batch of otherworldly supplicants who need her help.

Not long ago, Molly quite literally went to hell to help secure peace for her friend Dennis, who was born Buddy Parker in the 1920s in her beloved, adopted hometown of Oxbow, Florida. Oxbow has always felt charmed to Molly—that is, if she doesn’t count the ghostly visitors who turn her world upside down or the recent return of her ex-boyfriend Greg Richards, who brings with him the scourge of illicit drugs and a burning need to get even with her.

Molly is working on acquainting her best friend Dana with Dennis’s memory. He is the father Dana has never known but always resented. Molly must tread carefully, all too aware that she could easily lose her best friend in the process. What’s more, things heat up when Dana meets Glenn Morrison, the wheelchair-bound veteran Molly kind of thinks of as “hers.” But soon Molly finds herself threatened from all sides, as residents of hell plead for her help yet again.

In this sequel to Bitter Secrets, only time will tell if she can deal with worldly and supernatural problems as she fights her newest unholy foes—the advent of drugs into her world, decades of lies involving the powerful St. Claire family, and the shadows of her past.

The good, the bad and the living
I think any writer will tell you the same thing. Characters
– especially the really good ones – take on a life of their own. They live and
breathe. They have a pulse. They practically think for themselves. The stronger
the character, the more life they have. The writer’s just along for the ride.
I have only written two novels but this perception is so
strong I can’t see how it could be otherwise.
Take Buddy Parker, one of my own favorites. His story begins
in my first novel, Bitter Secrets, and continues in the sequel, Full Circle.  His character is rough around the edges, in a
warm but hard-bitten way. A life of hardship and loss has beaten him down but has
not cost him his humanity. For me, Buddy may be the quintessential hero.
Nothing slick or pat about this man. No Gregory Peck or Cary Grant would ever
play him on screen. Life has been hard on him and it shows. He’s not the great
guy you’d invite over to dinner or to share a round of golf. Most people cross
the street rather than meet him on the sidewalk. But Buddy’s got character –
deep and unseen.  His dog Lil’ Bit and a
bottle have been his only friends for years, but if eyes can see below the
surface, Buddy is a lost soul who’s protected himself from a thoughtless world
by layers of emotional scar tissue. He’s lost his family. Twice. The second
time he made the choice to walk away when he knew he could only deprive them of
a normal life.
The man had guts and a very big heart.
Sure, Buddy’s a hero, all right, but only a couple the other
characters that reside in my stories, and the reader, will ever know.
Now here’s a contrast for you.  Anderson St. Claire has always been provided
with the good things. He’s handsome. Women love him and men respect him – or at
least his stature in life. He has a loving and supportive family, money,
brains, education, a gift for dealing with people.
But Anderson has lost a part of his humanity. Or maybe he
just never developed it. Other humans are useful to him, they’re in his way or
they’re just window dressing. Each is dealt with accordingly. As a young man he
came up in Chicago, closely associated with the gangsters of the late 1920s and
‘30s.  He knows how to make money and how
to use it to his advantage. The family moved to Miami in the early ‘30s where
he perfected his style, then on to little Oxbow about a hundred miles away when
the “heat” in Miami came too close.
Anderson is at the top of the social scale in Oxbow– a small,
out of the way country town just perfect for him to play the role of benefactor
and satisfy his need for social status while staying out of the limelight of
bigger cities.
For me, both characters are riveting. Both are simple. Both
are complex. They have traveled very different paths. They live in the same
town, but not in the same world.
Good and bad cross over in life and in the writer’s mind.
Sometimes they’re hard to separate.
Maybe that’s the way a good story should be. Like in the
real world. The good and the bad mesh.
When a man does a good thing for a questionable reason, is
he good or is he bad?

When a man does a questionable thing for a good reason, what
is he?

Weakened, he is promised only months to live. When Western medicine leaves him without hope, botany professor Dr. Charles Douglas follows his past back to India in search of the only cure left to try.

The fate of mankind has nothing to do with mankind…

Born of an angel and a daimon, Diago Alvarez is a singular being in a country torn by a looming civil war and the spiritual struggle between the forces of angels and daimons. With allegiance to no one but his partner Miquel, he is content to simply live in Barcelona, caring only for the man he loves and the music he makes. Yet, neither side is satisfied to let him lead this domesticated life and, knowing they can’t get to him directly, they do the one thing he’s always feared.

They go after Miquel.

Now, in order to save his lover’s life, he is forced by an angel to perform a gruesome task: feed a child to the daimon Moloch in exchange for a coin that will limit the extent of the world’s next war. The mission is fraught with danger, the time he has to accomplish it is limited…and the child he is to sacrifice is the son Diago never knew existed.

A lyrical tale in a world of music and magic, T. Frohock’s In Midnight’s Silence shows the lengths a man will go to save the people he loves, and the sides he’ll choose when the sidelines are no longer an option.

I started writing very young. My first story was a young adult romance called ‘Trudy’. I wish I could find it so I can see how far I’ve come from then to now. Hopefully it’s a grand leap!

After only one year at ODU I dropped out to ‘live life’. Little did I know, life is expensive and it doesn’t suffer fools lightly. So after working 3 jobs at one time just to make ends meet, I decided to go back to school.

With any school, you have to meet with an advisor before registering for classes. So my advisor asked me what I wanted to do when I grew up. I proudly answered that I wanted to be a novelist. She smiled, nodded and said, “That’s nice. Now what will you do for money?”

Ouch! So I hopped from journalism to professional writing to literature but my heart always brought me back to creative writing. I figured if I’m going to spend my money for my education then I should enjoy it. So I stuck to creative writing and was pleased to find a non-residency Master’s program for Writing Popular Fiction at Seton Hill University. It’s the first in the country and invaluable. I learned so much and made great contacts.

Some writers receive their calling in childhood, and chart their course from there. I received mine at a rather more inconvenient life stage: while I was in first-year medical school.

Growing up, reading and writing fiction had always been my first love. My second just happened to be performing dissections in biology class. And because my scientific inclinations received just a smidge more encouragement from guidance counsellors, teachers, parents, random people on the street…well, you can see how these things happen.

But it wasn’t a mistake going to medical school. Throughout my years as a medical student and a resident I continued writing. That’s because: no matter what path one chooses, no matter how sensible and practical, a burning desire to write can never be fully quashed.

I am now a practising physician, a writer, and a mom. I’m also an active health blogger and writer. (You can read those blogs here, and here.)

After thirteen years stitching people’s lacerations, treating their sore throats, and checking their blood pressure, I recently became a published author. I have a wonderful agent, Sandy Lu of L. Perkins Agency, and a 3-book deal with Kensington Books. My first novel was published in June 2013, and the sequel was released in June 2014.

Sands Hetherington, the creator of Night Buddies series of chapter books, credits his son John for being his principal motivator. Sands and young John developed the Crosley crocodile character in the series during months of bedtime story give-and-take. They collaborated many nights on escapades starring John and Crosley, until eventually it occurred to Sands why it was that Crosley was bright red. That was when the first book came together.

Sands raised his son as a single parent from the time John was six. He read to him every night during those formative years: all of the classic children’s stories from Aesop through the Grimms, Lewis Carroll, Frank Baum, Tolkien and Dahl, with a lot of Dickens and Hugo thrown in. When school was out they got in the car and toured Alaska, Canada and most of the contiguous states. John still gets around. So far he has lived in Germany, Scotland, Russia, England and Spain.

Dogs have always been a part of the author’s life, beginning with Whiskers, a cocker spaniel. When his wonderful boxer Hube died, he despaired of finding a boxer who could match him, and instead got a Saint Bernard. He ended up breeding Saints for a number of years and at this point has had twelve as house pets. Sands says dogs can do you a power of good, and if you lose one, go out and get another the next day and you will be surprised at how fast your grief goes away.

Sands is also a Civil War buff. He would like to spend a month of evenings with common soldiers from both sides to see how they felt about the business. And eccentric generals like Jackson, Sherman and Forrest, and most of all Lincoln. Because Lincoln never gets to smile in his pictures.

The author was born in New York City but was transplanted a year later to Greensboro, North Carolina, where his maternal grandmother lived. He never really left the area and has a lot of the South in him. His grandmother was a prominent educator and became a great friend and mentor.

Sands majored in history at the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) and has an M.F.A. in creative writing and an M.A. in English from UNC-Greensboro. He lives in Greensboro now, and hangs out with his longtime friend Ann and their Saint Bernards Dudley and Maggie. He likes visiting ancient Mediterranean sites in Turkey and Italy, and most of all Greece.

Format: Kindle

Rich in atmosphere, imagination, and fun, the action-packed, magic-filled sequel to The Clockwork Dagger is an enchanting steampunk fantasy, evocative of the works of Trudi Canavan and Gail Carriger.

Narrowly surviving assassination and capture, Octavia Leander, a powerful magical healer, is on the run with handsome Alonzo Garrett, the Clockwork Dagger who forfeited his career with the Queen’s secret society of spies and killers—and possibly his life—to save her. Now, they are on a dangerous quest to find safety and answers: Why is Octavia so powerful? Why does she seem to be undergoing a transformation unlike any witnessed for hundreds of years?

The truth may rest with the source of her mysterious healing power—the Lady’s Tree. But the tree lies somewhere in a rough, inhospitable territory known as the Waste. Eons ago, this land was made barren and uninhabitable by an evil spell, until a few hardy souls dared to return over the last century. For years, the Waste has waged a bloody battle against the royal court to win its independence—and they need Octavia’s powers to succeed.

Joined by unlikely allies, including a menagerie of gremlin companions, she must evade killers and Clockwork Daggers on a dangerous journey through a world on the brink of deadly civil war.

Seven Reasons to Read (and Write) Steampunk

by Beth Cato

I’m Beth Cato, author of The Clockwork Dagger and the brand new sequel, The Clockwork Crown. The series is steampunk fantasy. I get to explain what steampunk IS to a lot of people, but I also like to explain why it’s such a blast to write. I’m a reader foremost, so I was inhaling Gail Carriger’s Parasol Protectorate and Cherie Priest’s Clockwork Century books before I tried writing the genre myself.

Without further ado, I present to you… seven reasons why I read (and write) steampunk.

1) Mix Up History.

Steampunk uses a Victorian or Edwardian world as inspiration but twists that every which way. London, with its fog-shrouded streets, acts as a setting for many books. Queen Victoria may be a character or under threat. However, this is historical fiction that takes great liberties. Lavie Tidhar’s The Bookman adds aliens and airships. Cherie Priest’s series beginning with Boneshaker re-imagines 19th century America with an extended Civil War–and a zombie problem.

2) Subvert that History!

Steampunk doesn’t glorify upper-crust Victorian life… it usually does quite the opposite. Let’s face it, that period of history involved a lot of misery for women, the colonized, the enslaved, the workers of new industry. Steampunk as a community–not simply a literary genre–is accepting of all ages, colors, and creeds. My own books are based on post-World War I Europe but do not take place on Earth. The cast is diverse. My hero, Alonzo Garret, is dark-skinned and missing half a leg.

3) Technology with a Twist.

Jules Verne and H.G. Wells are considered to be fathers of steampunk with their visions of submarines, space travel, and time machines. The airship is considered the most prominent symbol of the genre, but science fiction elements abound in weaponry, transportation, and mad scientist-type laboratories. Some draw directly on 19th century inspirations, such as Viola Carr’s The Diabolical Miss Hyde with its fresh take on Robert Louis Stevenson’s infamous story.

4) Mix in Magic.

This setting is just as friendly to fantasy elements. Gail Carriger’s series beginning with Soulless adds vampires and werewolves to Victorian London. My books feature a healer with magical powers drawn from a world tree–elements usually seen in epic fantasy.

5) The Clothes!

Ah, the clothes. Corsets may have been agony to wear (and they still are, even with modern aids) but they look amazing on most any figure. And men! Those fitted suits and hats add class to any scenario. These elements make for fabulous book covers, and are incredibly fun to describe on the page.

6) A Spirit of Adventure.

As somber as the real Victorian era was, there was also a great sense of possibility and exploration, whether in geographic expeditions or scientific achievements. Likewise, many steampunk books are adventure romps akin to the Indiana Jones movies–constant action, drama, and betrayals, often with a dash of romance mixed in. Anything is possible!

7) Clothes Aren’t Just for Book Characters.

Steampunk exists in the real world. Local groups offer opportunities to dress up in fabulous clothes and sip tea with like-minded peers. As an author of steampunk books, I often dress up for conventions or signings. For me, corsets are a work expense and a tax deduction! That’s certainly not a perk I ever expected when I first sat down to write The Clockwork Dagger.
